Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability

Executive Order 14057, titled Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability, directs the federal government to lead by example in addressing the climate crisis while pursuing economic opportunity. It sets ambitious, government-wide targets for clean electricity, zero-emission vehicles, energy-efficient buildings, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions across all federal operations and procurement. The order creates a centralized sustainability governance framework, establishes a Federal Chief Sustainability Officer and agency Chief Sustainability Officers, and builds a structure of cross-agency planning, performance management, and public-private collaboration to meet these goals. It also emphasizes environmental justice, resilience to climate impacts, sustainable procurement, and reporting on supplier emissions. In short, the order transforms how the federal government builds, buys, and manages operations to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 (with interim 2030–2035 milestones), while driving private investment, job creation in clean energy, and a more sustainable and resilient federal footprint.
