SERVICE Act of 2025
The SERVICE Act of 2025 would authorize a five-year pilot program led by the Attorney General (via the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services) to award grants to states, local governments, and Indian tribal governments. The goal is to create and operate veterans response teams within law enforcement agencies to better assist veterans in crisis. Eligible activities include identifying veterans, using VA resources (including the Veterans Re-Entry Search Service), coordinating with VA and community partners, partnering with Veterans Justice Outreach and veterans courts when applicable, providing mental health training for officers, and organizing 24/7 volunteer first-responder teams. The program would require ongoing evaluation and reporting to Congress and would be funded through existing grant authorities under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act, contingent on appropriations, with authority expiring five years after enactment.
