Safe Stay Act
The Safe Stay Act would amend the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 to mandate the installation of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in all sleeping or dwelling units within places of public accommodation that affect commerce (for example, hotels, motels, inns, and similar facilities). It updates fire safety guidelines to prefer the latest standards from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Fire Code (IFC), defines what constitutes a compliant CO alarm, and requires that property owners provide guests with a notice at check-in confirming compliance. The act envisions federal enforcement through the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), with the effective date for the new CO alarm requirement set to one year after enactment. It also directs administrative steps to keep state and master lists up to date with the new requirements.
