Weather Act Reauthorization Act of 2025

The Weather Act Reauthorization Act of 2025 is a broad reauthorization and modernization of NOAA’s Weather Research and Forecasting programs, expanding investment in weather research, forecasting improvements, and the handling of weather data. Building on the 2017 Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act, it elevates public safety as a core priority, expands the role of data and new observation technologies, and strengthens collaboration with the weather industry and academia. The bill also broadens NOAA’s activities in tsunami, hurricane, tornado, coastal flooding, and heat-health forecasting, while enlarging the commercial data program and efforts to modernize public communication of weather information. In addition to weather-specific programs, the act authorizes multi-year appropriations through 2030 with detailed, line-item allocations for NOAA research, forecasting, and related activities. It creates or expands centers, councils, and partnerships (such as the Earth Prediction Innovation Center and interagency coordination bodies), and it includes governance provisions for data management, privacy, and interoperability. The bill also touches on related authorities (arctic observations, landslide preparedness, harmful algal bloom research, agricultural and water management information, and tsunami response) to strengthen national resilience to weather- and climate-related hazards.
