Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act
The Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act would withhold federal financial assistance from jurisdictions (states or localities) that are deemed sanctuary entities. Each year, the Attorney General would identify jurisdictions not in compliance with 8 U.S.C. 1373 (which restricts local governments from blocking sharing of immigration-status information) or that do not comply with certain DHS detainer requests or notifications. Any identified jurisdiction would become ineligible for federal financial assistance for at least one year, and could regain eligibility only after the Attorney General certifies ongoing compliance. The Attorney General would also issue annual reports on compliance and respond to congressional requests for information about any jurisdiction. In short, the bill ties federal funding to compliance with immigration-enforcement-related mandates, aiming to pressure jurisdictions to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
