Republic of Somaliland Independence Act

This bill, titled the Republic of Somaliland Independence Act, would establish U.S. policy that Somalia’s territorial claims to Somaliland are invalid and without merit. It then authorizes the President to recognize Somaliland (a region in the northwest of Somalia with its own government) as a separate, independent country. In short, the bill would clear a path for the United States to formally recognize Somaliland, shifting the U.S. stance on Somaliland’s status and potentially altering its diplomatic and international relations, if the President chooses to act on this authorization. The bill has been introduced in the House (June 12, 2025) and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
