Propane Accessibility and Regulatory Relief Act

The Propane Accessibility and Regulatory Relief Act would direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to exempt a broad class of propane storage from the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS). Specifically, any propane tank with a capacity of up to 126,000 pounds of propane would be exempt from CFATS regulations. The Secretary would take necessary actions to implement this exemption. The bill is titled accordingly and was introduced in the 119th Congress on June 12, 2025. In practical terms, the bill removes CFATS regulatory requirements for sizable propane storage tanks—roughly on the order of tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand pounds of propane—reducing regulatory burdens on facilities that store sizable amounts of propane. It does not specify new safety standards beyond this exemption, and other federal requirements outside CFATS could still apply.
