Fuel Emissions Freedom Act

The Fuel Emissions Freedom Act would repeal the core federal and state motor vehicle emission and fuel economy standards currently in effect, and forever prohibit future such standards. It would eliminate federal emission standards under the Clean Air Act, remove state waivers and authority to set stricter standards, and repeal the federal corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) framework and related U.S. Code provisions. The bill also nullifies existing standards and references to them in other laws, and it prohibits both federal and state governments from establishing or enforcing any fuel emission standards for motor vehicles. Proponents frame the measure as restoring regulatory certainty and reducing costs, while critics warn it would increase pollution and hinder climate and public health goals and strip state leadership in clean vehicle policy.
