Awning Safety Act of 2025
The Awning Safety Act of 2025 would require the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to issue a mandatory, final safety standard for fixed and freestanding retractable awnings within 18 months of enactment. The standard is intended to prevent death or serious injury from hazards associated with retractable awnings, explicitly noting the risk of an awning opening unexpectedly and striking a person during the removal of bungee tie-downs for the awning cover. The CPSC would determine which retractable awning devices fall under the standard, and the resulting rule would be treated as a consumer product safety rule under existing CPSA authority. In short, the bill creates a fast-tracked, government-mirected rulemaking process to address safety hazards related to retractable awnings, with the aim of reducing serious injuries and fatalities among users, installers, and bystanders.
