COPS Act
The Curbing Offenses on Policing Services Act (COPS Act) is a bill introduced in the House by Rep. Tony Gonzales (TX) on June 26, 2025. It amends 18 U.S.C. §111 (the statute that criminalizes assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers or employees) to impose harsher penalties and to broaden the conduct covered. Specifically, the bill increases the maximum fines and prison terms, and adds explosive materials (as defined in 18 U.S.C. §841) to the list of factors that can trigger the enhanced penalties. The overall goal is to deter assaults on federal officers and to provide steeper consequences for offenses involving dangerous materials. If enacted, the changes would apply to federal officials and employees designated in §1114 while performing their official duties, potentially affecting the severity of federal charges and sentencing for assaults on those officers.
