Protecting Americans from Reckless Gun Dealers Act of 2025
The Protecting Americans from Reckless Gun Dealers Act of 2025 would expand federal oversight and transparency of gun dealer licensing. It requires the Attorney General to annually report to Congress on how the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) issues, inspects, and revokes Federal firearms licenses (FFLs) under federal law, including detailed statistics and licensee-specific information. It also mandates a Government Accountability Office (GAO) study on the effectiveness of ATF in issuing and revoking licenses, with a focus on potential systemic failures, geographic variation, and how revocation proceedings are handled. The bill ensures the annual report is publicly posted on the ATF website and sets out what constitutes a “serious violation” for purposes of these inspections. In short, the bill seeks greater public reporting on ATF licensing inspections and revocations and wants a formal, independent assessment of ATF’s licensing investigations and enforcement practices.
