Remembering Our Local Heroes Act
Remembering Our Local Heroes Act would direct the Secretary of the Interior to create a federal grant program to fund the construction, restoration, renovation, and maintenance of memorials that honor veterans, law enforcement officers, and firefighters. The program targets units of local government and nonprofit organizations, who would apply for grants to support covered memorials—such as statues, plaques, monuments, or similar features—owned or administered by these entities. Grants are capped at $100,000 each, with a requirement that recipients provide at least 50 percent non-Federal matching funds (which can include in-kind support). The bill authorizes $2 million per year for 2026 through 2030 to fund the program and sets priorities based on local community support and the exemplary public service or acts of bravery of the individuals memorialized. A key element is that the program would begin within six months after enactment. The bill is introduced in the 119th Congress, sponsored by Ms. Tenney and Mr. Pappas, and referred to the Committee on Natural Resources.
