CROP for Farming Act

The CROP for Farming Act (Conservation and Regenerative Optimization Practices for Farming Act) would amend the Food Security Act of 1985 to broaden the purposes of conservation incentive contracts. Specifically, it would allow these contracts to address not only general conservation practices but also reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and increases in carbon storage in plants or soil. The bill defines greenhouse gas emissions to include nitrous oxide and methane, and it expands the contract purpose to explicitly include lowering GHG emissions or enhancing soil and plant carbon storage. If enacted, this would steer conservation payments toward practices that mitigate climate impacts in agriculture, such as those that reduce methane and nitrous oxide or promote carbon sequestration.
