Mobile Cancer Screening Act
The Mobile Cancer Screening Act would amend the Public Health Service Act to create a new grant program administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) within HHS. The program would award grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements to fund new mobile cancer screening units aimed at expanding access to essential screening services in rural and underserved communities. Eligible recipients include nonprofit hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, academic health centers, health systems, or collaborations of these entities. Funds could be used to buy and operate mobile screening units, purchase imaging and digital tools, and cover other startup or operational costs. Awards would be capped at $2 million, and recipients must provide a matching share from non-federal sources. The secretary would prioritize projects with the greatest potential to reduce mortality, serve underserved areas (including rural and Indian Health Service regions), and ensure follow-up care for abnormal findings within 90 minutes. The act would authorize $15 million per year from 2027 through 2031 and require a Congress-report within four years detailing usage, impact on screening/testing rates, and recommendations.
