BANNED in Latin America Act
The BANNED in Latin America Act would require the U.S. Secretary of State to develop and share a comprehensive strategy within 180 days to counter Iranian and Hezbollah influence operations in Latin America. The plan would target Iran’s propaganda networks, cultural centers, and media outreach, as well as travel and activities of Iranian emissaries and other agents. It also calls for expanding U.S. intelligence capabilities to identify and disrupt related networks—including links to academic institutions and NGOs in the region—and creates a framework to disrupt broadcasting platforms associated with Iran and Hezbollah (similar to actions taken against Al-Manar and Press TV). Additionally, the bill directs consideration of designation actions against Iran’s Al Mustafa International University network. The strategy would be delivered in unclassified form (with a potential classified annex) to the relevant congressional committees (House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations).
