Medicaid Breast Cancer Access to Treatment Act
Medicaid Breast Cancer Access to Treatment Act would expand Medicaid coverage in two main ways. First, it creates a new category of individuals with breast or cervical cancer who must be covered under Medicaid (by adding this group to the list of mandatory Medicaid populations). This means certain patients with these cancers would be eligible for Medicaid benefits more explicitly under the program. Second, it requires Medicaid to cover breast reconstruction surgery after a medically necessary mastectomy as part of medical assistance. The bill also makes conforming changes to funding and cost-sharing rules to accommodate these new covered services, and it delays the full effect of these changes to begin one year after enactment. In short, the bill aims to improve access to cancer treatment and post-surgery reconstruction for Medicaid beneficiaries, while adjusting how funding and patient cost-sharing work to implement these changes.
