Preparing Election Administrators for AI Act

The Preparing Election Administrators for AI Act would require the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to develop voluntary guidelines for running elections that address artificial intelligence (AI). In partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the EAC must produce a report and guidelines within 60 days of enactment, covering the benefits and risks of using AI in election administration, cybersecurity concerns, and how AI-generated information could affect the sharing of accurate election information and the spread of disinformation. Additionally, the Act directs the EAC to study how AI was used in the 2024 federal elections and how AI-generated information was disseminated, with findings to inform an update of the voluntary guidelines by July 31, 2026. The guidelines are intended for state and local election offices and must be publicly available.
