Improving Disaster Assistance for Veterans Act

The Improving Disaster Assistance for Veterans Act would amend the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to designate a Veteran Advocate within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Advocate’s job is to champion fair treatment for veterans in disaster assistance, participate in the disaster and emergency declaration processes to ensure veterans’ needs are considered, act as the main point of contact between veterans service organizations and FEMA, and help expand veteran recruitment for FEMA, including reservist positions. The bill does not authorize new types of disaster aid beyond what is already allowed; it simply adds a dedicated advocate and related duties within FEMA.
