Supporting Military Voters Act
The Supporting Military Voters Act would require the Comptroller General (GAO) to conduct two linked analyses: (1) how effectively the federal government carries out its responsibilities under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) to promote voting access for absent uniformed services voters, and (2) how to improve access to voter registration information and assistance for members of the Armed Forces and their family members. The bill outlines a detailed set of data points the GAO must examine (ballot transmission and counting, accuracy and security of voting methods, VAO program effectiveness, coordination with election officials, and awareness/timing of required voter information). It also requires a companion study of actions bymilitary departments to boost access to registration information and the associated costs. The GAO must report its findings by September 30, 2027, with cooperation from the DoD, and using existing data plus new investigations as needed. The act defines “absent uniformed services voter” and “family member” for purposes of the analyses.
