Path to Florida Springs National Park Act
The Path to Florida Springs National Park Act would direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special resource study to evaluate whether the study area in central and north Florida is suitable and feasible for designation as a unit of the National Park System. The study would cover about 2,800 square miles of land south of Jacksonville, north of Orlando, and east of Gainesville, including Ocala National Forest and a broad set of state, local, and private lands and preserves. The investigation would assess the area’s national significance, explore potential federal designation or other preservation options, identify cost estimates for any federal involvement, and involve consultation with interested parties. A final report with findings and recommendations would be due within three years after funds are first made available. The bill does not create a National Park by itself; it only authorizes a study to determine whether such a designation should be pursued, along with alternatives and associated costs. Sponsored by Representative Fine, the bill was introduced in the House and referred to the Committee on Natural Resources.
