Smart Cities and Communities Act of 2025
The Smart Cities and Communities Act of 2025 aims to accelerate the adoption of smart technologies and systems in U.S. cities and communities. It would create a federal framework for coordinating agency activities, funding, and standards; establish a government-wide resource guide; and provide direct funding and workforce programs to help local governments plan, Demonstrate, and implement smart-city projects. A strong emphasis runs through the bill on equity, privacy, and cybersecurity, with requirements to assess workforce needs, protect data, and share best practices. The act would also explore innovative financing and offer technical assistance, vouchers, and a technologist-in-residence program to connect national labs with local projects. In short, it seeks to align federal efforts, grow a domestic smart-city industry, and help communities—especially smaller and rural ones—deploy connected, data-driven services while safeguarding privacy and security.
