Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act

The Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act would add a new ground to the immigration law that makes noncitizens (aliens) who have been convicted of, or who admit to committing, driving while intoxicated or impaired (DWI/DUI) or related impairment offenses inadmissible to enter the United States and deportable if they are already present. The new provisions apply regardless of whether the offense is classified as a misdemeanor or a felony in any jurisdiction, and they rely on the definition of DWI/DUI and impairment as defined by the jurisdiction where the offense occurred. The bill also covers admissions of such acts, not just formal convictions. In short, a DUI offense could bar admission to the U.S. or trigger removal from the country, even for offenses that might otherwise be treated leniently under current law.
