Gun Safety Board and Research Act
The Gun Safety Board and Research Act would create a new Gun Safety Board within the Department of Health and Human Services. The Board, made up of 22 members from public health, mental health, law enforcement, victims’ groups, firearm stakeholders, and representatives from key federal agencies, would oversee original research on firearm violence reduction, fund grants for related research and public education, and publish annual policy and research findings. The aim is to inform federal, state, and local action by providing evidence on what reduces firearm violence, identify research needs, and assess the likely impact of existing and proposed laws. The Act also sets specific funding levels, governance rules, and a prohibition on diverting other federal gun-violence research funds to this program.
