Reproductive Freedom for Veterans Act
The Reproductive Freedom for Veterans Act would amend title 38 of the U.S. Code to require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide abortion care, counseling, and related services and medications to certain individuals who receive health care from the VA. Specifically, the bill creates a new category of “covered individuals”—including both veterans who are “covered veterans” and individuals eligible for VA benefits under another subsection—and then requires VA hospital care and medical services furnished to these individuals to include abortion and related services. The change is codified by adding a new Sec. 1720M to the chapter on health care for veterans and by updating the table of sections accordingly. In short, if enacted, the VA would be obligated to provide abortion services and related support (such as counseling and medications) to eligible veterans and other VA beneficiaries, expanding the scope of care currently offered through VA health programs.
