Correct the Count Act
H.R. 4884, titled the Correct the Count Act, would require the Secretary of Commerce, through the Census Bureau, to conduct the decennial census in a way that counts only United States citizens for population tabulations. The bill directs that, for the census, the standard be based on section 141 of title 13 U.S.C., but with the key change that only citizens would be included in population counts. It also mandates that the census questionnaire include a citizenship checkbox or similar option so respondents can indicate whether each person in the household is a U.S. citizen. The bill was introduced in the House on August 5, 2025 by Mr. Fine and referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In essence, the bill would transform how population counts are used for federal purposes (such as apportionment of Representatives and possibly funding formulas) by excluding non-citizens from the official population totals and by collecting citizenship data directly through the census questionnaire.
