Stop Foreign Propaganda Act
Stop Foreign Propaganda Act would authorize U.S. sanctions on anyone who knowingly provides content or media services to foreign media entities that are deemed propaganda outlets or are otherwise sanctioned. The measure codifies a 2018 executive order and creates a framework to block financial transactions, bar US procurement deals, deny financing from the Export-Import Bank, and potentially deny visas to foreign actors who support or supply material to such outlets. The bill targets both U.S. and foreign persons under U.S. jurisdiction and requires regular reporting to Congress on who is providing such support and how sanctions are enforced. It also requires ongoing assessment of Iran’s state-backed media activities and their influence operations. In short, the bill tightens U.S. leverage over entities that assist or enable foreign propaganda by sanctioned outlets, expanding the reach of sanctions to the provision of media services, and demanding oversight through periodic Congressional reporting.
