Shielding Students from Wildfire Smoke Act

The Shielding Students from Wildfire Smoke Act would require federal oversight to improve how schools and childcare facilities protect children from wildfire smoke. Specifically, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would must seek a contract with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to review current policies addressing wildfire smoke exposure in K-12 schools and early childhood programs, including during and after wildfire events and in related out-of-school activities run by these programs. The review would evaluate existing standards and mitigation approaches, identify gaps in research and policy, and provide Congress with recommendations on how to better safeguard children—especially in under-resourced settings—during and after wildfire smoke events.
