American Decade of Sports Act
The American Decade of Sports Act would require the Department of State to create and implement a formal “mega-decade” sports diplomacy strategy that uses the major international sports events hosted in the United States from 2024 through 2034 to boost U.S. soft power, strengthen diplomatic relationships, and reinforce U.S. leadership globally. It would establish a dedicated Office of Sports Diplomacy within the State Department (renaming and elevating the existing sports diplomacy division), mandating ongoing five-year strategies, public reporting, and close coordination with host cities, the sports industry, diaspora communities, and civil society. The plan would also emphasize public diplomacy, visa facilitation for participants and visitors, and engagement with U.S. cultural sectors to enhance cultural exchange. Key elements include detailed objectives and success metrics, interagency coordination, visa processing improvements, funding needs, and the use of domestic public diplomacy resources. Strategies would be made publicly available and updated periodically, with regular consultations with Congress. The bill defines the scope of the “mega-decade” events and directs the Office to manage related programs and partnerships through 2034.
