HEALTH AI Act

H.R. 5045, the HEALTH AI Act, would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to create a grant program awarding funds to eligible entities to conduct research on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Eligible research could cover improving clinicians’ notes and inquiry during patient visits, reducing administrative burdens, expediting medical claims, and enhancing health care customer service, among other health care improvements as determined by HHS. Grants would be prioritized for projects that promote AI adoption in health care, invest in workforce development, reduce clinician burnout, decrease gender/racial/ethnic health disparities, and improve access for medically underserved populations. The act defines key terms and sets eligibility to include colleges, certain nonprofits, and government agencies at the federal, state, local, or tribal levels.
