To amend the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 to direct the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a program under which the Secretary will award grants to specialty crop producers to acquire certain equipment and provide training with respect to the use of such equipment.
This bill would add a new program to the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946 that directs the Secretary of Agriculture, through the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), to award grants to eligible specialty crop producers to buy automation and mechanization equipment and to pay for training on how to use that equipment. Grants are intended to help U.S. specialty crop producers become more competitive by increasing efficiency and reducing labor needs. Recipients must provide nonfederal matching funds (at least 50%), and the eligible equipment list covers a broad range of automated tools—from harvest and processing machinery to drones, sensors, and IoT/automation support. The program aims to offset a significant portion of project costs and requires training and related professional services to deploy and operate the new technology.
