Synthetic Biology Advancement Act of 2025
The Synthetic Biology Advancement Act of 2025 would create a National Synthetic Biology Center within the Department of Agriculture to accelerate research and development in synthetic biology for food and agriculture. The Center would award competitive grants to eligible institutions (the 1862, 1890, and 1994 land‑grant institutions) in partnership with other entities such as nonprofits, state entities, National Laboratories, and other eligible institutions. The goal is to discover and deploy science‑based synthetic biology solutions that improve agricultural performance, reduce environmental impact, and bolster the resilience of the U.S. food system. The bill authorizes specific funding for the Center and sets reporting and coordination requirements, with the Center expected to begin awarding grants within one year of enactment and to report to Congress biennially on progress and impacts.
