Peace Through Strength Act of 2025
This bill would rename the Department of Defense (DoD) to the Department of War, and would rename the top official from Secretary of Defense to Secretary of War. It also sets out findings and a sense of Congress that the name “Department of War” would better signal strength and readiness to wage and win war, not merely defend. The core legal change is to rewrite references in the U.S. Code so that “Department of Defense” becomes “Department of War” and “Secretary of Defense” becomes “Secretary of War.” The bill includes transitional provisions to ensure references to the department in current law, rules, regulations, and other official papers are considered to refer to the Department of War, with appropriate substitutions for subordinate officials and titles where applicable. Implementation would proceed consistent with applicable law and subject to available appropriations.
